Deuteronomy 8:18 – But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.
Proverbs 28:19 – Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits will have plenty of poverty.
There is no disputing the fact that a lot of people aspire to be rich. Yet, many end up being poor. According to Joe C. David, author of Be Your Own Boss, below are some of the reasons why most people end their lives remaining poor.
Such people never think about retiring wealthy. They may see other people were doing well and wish that they had more money, but they never think it is just as possible for them as it is for others who have already attained it. The truth is that those people who are doing better than you are doing today started by doing poorly. If you say you can, you can and if you say you can’t, then you can’t. There are no limitations except those you place on your mind. Release your mind of these barriers, and you will see your life changed drastically.
Such people procrastinate a lot. They think about their dreams, goals and plans, and make decisions and suddenly discard them. In fact, in some cases, they back off ultimately. This happens from year to year, from one aspect of the lives to another. People who are victims of procrastination think they will live forever, and then suddenly they look up to see that they are forty or even fifty, and yet nothing has been done about the dreams and visions they had in their early twenties. At times like this, such people are in massive debt with no money in the bank. What a pitiable condition because the resources are no longer there to take care of the family!
Failure to retire rich. Even if they think about it and either admire or envy those who ahead of them financially, such people never decide to be financially independent. Many people drifted for years before they finally decided to stop making excuses and started making progress. It does not matter how long you have been wrong; the truth is that it is never too late to be right. Taking action will work for you if you will be willing to make a decision today.
Inability to delay gratification. According to Mike Murdock, champions are willing to do things they hate to create something they love. You need to develop discipline in spending, which entails what you eat, wear, and the kind of pleasure you engage in. Those who retire poor cannot hold themselves back from spending everything they make, and a little bit more besides. They never have savings. They eat up everything they earn and even borrow more from friends and family members. They are always in a financial mess. They know that their income is not enough, and yet they tried to live beyond their means. The key to delaying gratification is simple. Practice self-discipline, think of having financial security tomorrow by playing low on today’s expenditures.
People who retire poor never learn how to deploy their financial assets. No one comes into the world with an understanding of money. Everyone lends it on the way through, that is by way of attending or taking courses, reading books, meeting greater men and listening to audio programs. You should also subscribe to the various magazines in the market and online magazines on the Internet that have detailed articles on how you can best deploy your funds for the highest returns combined with the highest level of safety. You would not even think of baking a cake without using a recipe, yet many people try to plan their entire financial lives without a little knowledge of the skills on investments.
