THE GENTILE’S PRAYER

Recently I ran into a lady I had known for a while. Though we hardly say much to each other, we had a rapport. On the said date, she was downcast. I noticed her and enquired what the issue was. She told me, it was nothing she could not handle. I told her that I knew she was strong but for God to make me notice her means that we could talk. I don’t know if that made sense, but she went ahead to share her issues with me.

It was “man-problem.” She told me how people she had been in relationships want to have carnal knowledge of her before proceeding to state their intentions. She said that what infuriated her was that these people are supposed to be her brethren in the Lord, who should know better.  She told me of other folks she knows who have succumbed to this bait theory and are now married.

We talked at length and I encouraged her in the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ.  We prayed afterwards, and we went our way. But that incident made me ponder. “How could people who pray and worship God have it in mind to take advantage of people?”

These people go to church daily. They pray. They worship. So why is their worship not changing them? In my meditation, I got to know why. It is because these people come to God to solve their problems. They are not interested in God and what He wants and as thus they pray the prayers of the Gentiles. Jesus stated what this prayer was in Matthew 6:31 -32.

31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

These people are very active when they pray about the death of their enemies. Since we are material-acquisition conscious, they plug into it. They gyrate while praying and when one sees that, s/he is impressed by their zeal and commits things to them. That is when their real character shows. They take advantage of the system and give the other people of faith a bad name.

There is no need to spend time describing these people because they abound. Since these people are focused on their material needs, their spirit-man is not developed. The result is that they are more focused on what they can see and as such spiritual substance has no meaning to them. How will they know spiritual substance if they have not been taught to recognize it?

The main purpose of Christian discipleship is to be like Christ. Christian discipleship might best be described as a training or mentoring program designed to develop individuals to become more like their Savior. But the light shines where darkness persists. This is a call from the people of God who are the salt of the earth and the light of the world to persist in doing good and keeping the faith. This is a call for our churches to take discipleship seriously. Learning to be Christ-like is a process and everyone that nameth the name of the Lord has to go through this process. It builds faith and character in you.

With sincerity of heart and purity of spirit, when one truly follows Christ, you will be disgusted by the thought of taking advantage of the vulnerable in our midst. You will be more interested in being a force for good.  Materials things will lose its hold on you. Sin will drop off you effortlessly because your focus is on godly and heavenly things. When that happens, this will be your new reality (Matthew 6:33–34)

33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
