Dear friend, I hope all is well with you and that you are as healthy in body as you are strong in spirit. 3 John 1: 2 (NLT)
According to Jim Davidson, to maintain and preserve your health, you need to have a physical examination done regularly. If you have not had a medical check-up recently, it is better to consult your doctor. In performing the medical examination, your doctor will usually check some signs that indicate the status of your health as offered below:
Your temperature. Normal temperature is thirty-seven degrees Celsius, though there are some variation between individuals. A high reading usually indicates some type of infection in your body.
Your pulse. Nominal pause for most people is about seventy-two beats per minute. The pulse will vary, depending on your age, sex, and physical condition. It ranges from fifty to ninety beats per minute. A well-conditioned heart returns to normal very quickly after periods of exercise.
Your blood pressure. Usually, the doctor will take you pressure reading from vessels in your upper arm. Two readings are taken during examination. One is a higher pressure called the systolic pressure, which occurs when the heart contracts and the lower pressure, which represents the heart muscle at rest, called the diastolic pressure. The average pressure for adults under age forty is about one hundred and twenty for systolic and eighty for the diastolic.
Your weight. One of the major health problems today is obesity. It is reported that up to 70% of all people in the US alone, for example, are overweight. In Nigeria, the prevalence of overweight individuals ranges from 20.3% – 35.1%, while the prevalence of obesity ranged from 8.1%-22.2%. The prevalence of overweight and obese individuals in Nigeria is of epidemic proportions. Generally speaking, when a person is overweight, it means that he or she is taking in more calories than the body requires for fuel. Too much weight adds stress to the physical frame and additional pressure on heart muscles, and it also makes it more difficult for the circulatory systems to function correctly.
Other vital signs. Apart from the areas mentioned above, your doctor will usually request a urine specimen to determine blood sugar levels and impurities that may result from a deficient filtering system.
