It is a truism that the subject of giving cannot be insignificant in the attainment of financial prosperity. By way of by Biblical allusion, Jesus said thus: “it is better to give than to receive.” It is not an overstatement to assert that the blessing of giving is immeasurable. It has been confirmed that one way to judge a person is by what he says; a better way is by what he does, and the best way is by what he gives.
What you have is meant to be shared with others, you are blessed to bless others, and you must know this truth. Remember that stagnant water which can be likened to a stingy selfish person) stinks. No one finds life worth living, but we make it worth living by what we give. Most people never give the little they have because they feel it’s not worth appreciating. According to Theodore Roosevelt, a former President of the United States, “it is not what you have that matters, but what you do with what you have that really matters.” It must be stressed at this analytical juncture that giving is not all about meeting financial needs of others, but it also involves investing in others. You must show your fellow human beings that you care, especially as people do not care how much you know until they know how much you care.
Life is so practical that in this world, a majority of those that are depressed are the selfish ones because they cannot find true happiness in what they have acquired. Give according to your level. An Indian proverb says, “good people like clouds, receive only to give away.” Giving is always the thermometer of our love for others. If you must love your neighbours as yourself, then try the principle of giving.
Selfishness or stinginess is antithetical to giving and it always ends in frustration. John Ruskin, an English writer says thus: “when a man is wrapped up in himself, he makes a pretty small package. There is no happiness in having or getting, but only in giving. The test of generosity is not necessarily how much you give, but how much you have left.”
Remember that givers never lack. Therefore, if you do not want to lack anything good in life, make the principle of giving a lifestyle. In the final analysis, note that your gifts to determine your lifts. Great people are great givers, and the secret to living is giving.
